Active Travel Index

The Active Travel Index is a tool that measures the number of people with high physical activity who make use of public transport. It is used to identify areas where active travel infrastructure and policies could be improved. The Index can also help decision-makers prioritize investment in active travel.
The Active Travel Index is based on four indicators:

1. Proportion of trips made by walking, cycling or public transport
2. Proportion of physically active people
3. Access to active travel infrastructure
4. Policies and programs that support active travel

This tool will help achieve the goal of the following objectives

  • Less Contamination
  • Less Emissions
  • Less Traffic Noise
  • Connectivity and Inclusion
  • Healthy Destinations
  • Less Traffic Violence
  • Active Transportation
  • Green Space

Estimation Technique

The Active Travel Index is generally used as a tool that ranks cities around the world according to their “walkability”. Before and after strategies are put into place to improve physical activity levels, estimations can be made to determine how many individuals are physically active and how they access public transportation. The results can be compared, which will reveal that physically active people are the ones who can use public transit or engage in active transportation. Still, those who are not physically active may be less able to access safe and healthy transportation.
