Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory Tool

Cities and towns can use the Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s (MAPC) Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory Tool to establish a community-wide GHG emissions baseline. This can then be used to track changes in emissions over time, thereby demonstrating progress made toward a community’s climate goals and places where improvement is needed.

This tool will help achieve the goal of the following objectives

  • Less Contamination
  • Less Emissions
  • Less Traffic Noise
  • Connectivity and Inclusion
  • Healthy Destinations
  • Less Traffic Violence
  • Active Transportation
  • Green Space

Estimation Technique

The Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory Tool calculates emissions by combining data on energy use and emissions factors. Emissions factors are estimates of the amount of greenhouse gases emitted for each energy unit. The tool uses national average emissions factors, which are updated regularly. To calculate emissions from a particular activity (like transportation), the tool multiplies the activity data by the appropriate emissions factor.
